Thunder Hole

Updated: Jul 20, 2020

They tell you the sound is like thunder, but they don't mention the view is striking too.

It took me a while to find the parking for Thunder Hole, but in early May there were plenty of open spots when I figured it out. I walked across the road and I was there on the edge of the continent hearing the steady thud of waves on the rocks.

There is an extensive viewing platform that will allow you to see the water rush into the "Hole" to make a sound described as thunder. The sound changes based on the tide, so you may want to check the tidal schedule and time your visit to this one. I came at a good time to see the water rush in and slam the rocks like a battering ram, knocking up some hefty waves.

I wouldn't have described the sound like thunder when I was there, so I probably missed the best timing. It sounded like the ocean playing the shore as a huge drum.

If you closed your eyes, you could imagine it inspired the war drums of old and you could feel the tremor run through the rocks under your feet.

Outside the viewing platform you can clamber right down to the beach at low tide and see the tidal pools.

You can also see the surrounding cliffs and beaches. The view epitomizes what Acadia National Park is known for. The rocky terrain stubbornly resists the ocean and tough evergreens stand proud along the shore.

For you more adventurous spirits, you can walk the clifftop out into the ocean for the perfect view.
